Present Perfect OR Past Simple

I have been to London

I went to London in 1993

We use Present Perfect when we talk about something we did in the unspecified time of our life between the moment of our birth and the moment of our present.

Past Simple, on the other hand, is used when there is a specific time e.g. 1990. yesterday.

A sentence in Simple Past often complements the information contained in a sentence from Present Perfect.

A: I have found my wallet!
B: When did you find it?
A: Ten minutes ago. It was behind those books.

Present Perfect often expresses the duration of activity:

I’ve known her for a long time.
We’ve been married for over 8 years.

Past Simple indicates when something happened:

met her 12 years ago.
We got married in 1995.

Read the story below

Lucy: Hey there, so there’s this cool story about a party, and it all started when I got an invitation. My friend Tom sent me an invitation to his birthday party. It said, “Come to Tom’s birthday party with your birthday hat on!”

I put on my birthday hat and went to Tom’s place. When I got there, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The whole place had decorations with balloons and colorful streamers. There was a cake with a candle on it.

The party was with great music, and everyone danced happily. There was a table with presents for Tom. It was a really great atmosphere.

As the night came, we all sang “Happy Birthday” to Tom. He made a wish and blew the candle on the cake. We also played some games.

I was happy to see my friends. We laughed, danced, and shared stories happily. Confetti, empty cups, and party hats were all over the house.

The next morning, I woke up and I was in the middle of the room. There were cake slices all over the floor, dirty balloons, and paper from the presents. I thought, “What an awesome party it was but it’s a bit dirty now!”

I started cleaning up, but I smiled as I remembered all the fun. It was a birthday party to remember, and I’m so glad I was a part of it.
